Boy Scout Troop 381

We are the sponsoring organization for Boy Scout Troop 381, enabling boys and young men to develop their leadership skills, form healthy friendships, and pursue their dreams. The Troop Leader is Mike Duff, but there are many active supportive parents who contribute to the troop's success. Once they get their website up and running we will post a link here. In the meantime, if you would like to get in touch with Mike, please send a message to the church at worship@lcrpv.org and we will pass it along.

2010 for Troop 381 meant 100 years for scouting, 47 years for Troop 381, 1 great year with the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection. Thank you so much to Pastor Alix, the Board, and members for sponsoring the Troop and for all the support the Church provided in 2010. The heart of the Scouting program is to get the Scouts to plan, implement and then lead the events they choose.

The boys had a fantastic record of coordinating events in 2010. In January we went caving and camping at Ha Ha Tonka State park, just South of Lake of the Ozarks. February, we camped at Westin Bend State Park. We went tubing Friday night at Snow Creek and then returned Saturday and Skied all day. Dave Western (aka Wakarusa) visited the Troop and amazed the Scouts with his adventures on the Appalachian Trail. March the Troop headed south to Arkansas for Spring Break to backpack on the Butterfield Trail just outside of Devils Den State Park. For most of the scouts this was their first overnight adventure into the forest.

Late in March several scouts were “working on the railroad” in Baldwin City. April saw the Troop safely backpacking and hiking two nights through the Hercules Glades wilderness in the South Central part of Missouri. In May we fortunate enough to camp at “Teal Lake”. A wonderful spot not any many maps so I can’t report any more than it is a magical place for Boy Scouts. June means Summer Camp at Camp Geiger just outside of St. Joseph Missouri. 16 Scouts earned more than 55 merit badges over the 6 days. 4 scouts joined the Tribe of the Mic-O-Say while two others advanced.

June this year also meant a pilgrimage and a ten day 55 mile trek at the Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico for seven Scouts and three adults. July and August saw one scout travelling east to Fort A.P. Hill to attend the Centennial Celebration and the National Jamboree. September picks back up with the Troop’s favorite campout at the Snouffer Farm, just west of Louisburg, KS. The troop participated in the “Scout Out Hunger” campaign and raised enough food donations for Harvesters to fill a small SUV on pickup day.

The Heart of America Council celebrated Scouting’s Centennial in September and we camped with more than 10,000 others near camp Naish. (this was the only event with less than perfect weather) Fortunately, we won’t have to do this one again for another 100 years! October we were sailing small boats at Clinton Lake. Also this month, 12 Scouts, 10 scout parents, and 4 adult community members, spent more than 220 combined hours building a better wheelchair ramp for a family in Prairie Village.

Pastor Alix joined the Troop for a truly memorable ribbon cutting just 15 days after we were first presented this opportunity to help. The new ramp makes it possible to get a family member from the kitchen to the driveway in 25 seconds; a process that took as much as 20 to 30 minutes before. November we “backpacked in” and camped two nights in Rockhaven Park near Lawrence. December we headed to Wallace State Park for a weekend of cold camping, nighttime hikes, and “off program” ice events. More than 100 folks attended our 47th annual Chili Supper the first Monday in December. This is our annual fundraiser and once again we were amazed at the generosity of our scouting community.
