Our 2007 music season was capped off in November by
an excellent performance of Bach, Beethoven and Gershwin on the
Celebration Series and followed by an equally enjoyable pre-service
concert on Christmas Eve that featured some holiday jazz standards
as well as more traditional pieces by Handel and others. In the
coming months, look for the musical diversity to continue.
Our Celebration Series continues on February 24th
with a performance by Wilfredo Pasamba, cellist (recent graduate
of the Juilliard School). Shoko Kinsella appears on March 30th in
a concert of Beethoven, Johann Strauss (a finger-breaking arrangement
of “The Blue Danube”), and Prokofiev. In April, you’ll definitely
want to come to the concert on the 13th, where guests from the UMKC
conservatory will perform Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End
of Time. This is a truly moving piece of music - Messiaen wrote
this work wile a prisoner of war in a concentration camp during
World War II. Despite the horror of his surroundings, it is a hymn
to love, joy and the perseverance of the human spirit. It promises
to be an unforgettable concert!
Our choir and bell choir schedule for the coming months will include
a healthy mix of spirituals and some contemporary music with guest
musicians.
