2025 - 2026 Academic Year

Sept 7 & 14
Introduction to Orthodox Christianity
It’s always enlightening to learn about other faith and cultural traditions. In this two-part session, we’ll learn the basics about the Orthodox Church and how it compares to other Christian traditions. We will be joined by a member of the Russian Orthodox congregation that met in LCR’s chapel for several years, for the second session to reflect on her experience in the Orthodox Church.

Sept 21 & 28
King James Translation
One of the most enduring and popular translations of the Bible- for some it is considered the “real” Bible. How did this translation come about?

Oct 5, 12, 19
Psalms
We will study a few selected Psalms, the writers and what motivated the composition.

Oct 20 & 27
Regenerative Agriculture
Regenerative agriculture is a term that’s becoming trendy now but was scoffed at only a few years ago, and still is in many places today. It means simply to put back into the soil what was taken out during farming, not extracting nutrition and replacing it with chemical fertilizers. Lisa Stewart’s sessions will explain more about how farmers are learning how to bring put life back into soil.

Nov 2
Prayer
Prayer is one of the most important parts of our ongoing relationship with God, and yet it is one thing that we probably neglect if we did not learn effective ways to communicate. This class will explore why we pray, to whom we pray and some easy ways to increase your daily prayer life without really trying! Led by Pastor Susan Langhauser

Nov 9 & 16
Who Were the Gospel Authors?
The Gospels are the root of our faith and probably our deepest connection with God through what Luther called, “The Living Word.” While not actually eye-witness accounts, the writers of these 4 commentaries on the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus can start a lifelong love affair with the story of God as expressed through Jesus. Understanding the context of each Gospel and what we know about the authorship, recipients and timing can be extremely helpful. While parallel in much of their story-telling, these two gospels are a wonderful way to explore how to compare/contrast the Jesus event as it informs your faith and life. Led by Pastor Susan Langhauser

Dec 7 & 15
The Two Adams
From Genesis in the Old Testament to Paul in the New Testament how has Adam evolved and why?

Jan 11 & 18
Change
We deal with it all the time. We joke that applying the same remedy to a problem time after time and expecting different results is the definition of insanity. It’s not insanity, really; it’s simply fear of change. So understanding whether a challenge/problem is technical or adaptive is crucial to working toward a real solution. So what does all of this have to do with LCR and the wider Church? Led by former Bishop Roger Gustafson

Jan 25
From Belief to Action: Engaging in Social Justice
This class will explore how Christians can faithfully engage in social justice, drawing on Scripture and our values to guard and defend the vulnerable. Together, we’ll consider practical ways to live out our faith through advocacy, service, and compassion in our communities and beyond.

Feb 8 & 15
Common Statement of Filioque - What’s that?
The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and the Orthodox Church have issued a joint statement on the addition of the Filioque clause to the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed, an issue that has divided the Eastern and Western Church traditions for almost a thousand years. What is this all about and how does the statement resolve it?

March 1, 8 & 15
1- 2 Peter
Two short books with a powerful message. Based on the “Explore the Bible” series, this study reminds us of the hope we have in Jesus.

March 22 & 29
What is Christian Nationalism?
We’ll examine the history, tenants, structure, and goals of this growing movement. How do we view patriotic duty in light of our faith and respond to a movement that seems to contradict biblical teaching?

April 12 & 19
Resurrection Story Comparisons
Each of the four Gospel writers tells a story of the resurrection of Jesus, but they are not identical. We will examine a side by side chart of the differences and explore the essential composite truth of the Easter message.

April 26 & May 3
A Biblical Response to Immigration
In this class we’ll explore what the Bible says about welcoming the stranger and how scripture can guide our response to immigration and immigrants today. Together we’ll consider ways to live out God’s call to show hospitality and compassion toward immigrants in our communities.

Sundays without specific topics will be reserved for Bible text study using the scriptures for the day.
