Jesus invites us to let go of the stuff that is getting in the way of our relationship with God.
Mark 10:13-16
People were bringing little children to [Jesus] in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.” 16And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.
Mark 9:38-41
38John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” 39But Jesus said, “Do not stop him; for no one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me. 40Whoever is not against us is for us. 41For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward.” (NRSV)
Wisdom and intelligence are not the same thing. The Epistle of James calls us to be like owls with the wisdom that comes from God.

When the Israelites complain against God and are bitten by snakes, God tells Moses to put a bronze serpent on a pole and when they look at it they will not longer die from snakebite. Jesus says that in the same way he will be lifted up (on the cross), because God loves the world and sent the son to save us.
