Episode 241: The Battle for Freedom
The Rev. Dr. Alix Pridgen
Text: Romans 7:15-25a
Independence Day Weekend /250th Anniversary of the United States.
Every nation is shaped by a vision of what it hopes to become. Two hundred and fifty years ago, the Declaration of Independence articulated a bold vision of human dignity, liberty, and equality. Though America has often fallen short of those ideals, each generation continues striving toward them.
Scripture presents an even greater vision. From the Law and the Prophets to the teachings of Jesus, God calls humanity into a kingdom marked by justice, mercy, generosity, peace, and love. Yet we know from experience that knowing what is right is not the same as doing it.
In Romans 7, the Apostle Paul names the struggle that every honest person recognizes: "I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do." Our deepest problem is not ignorance or a lack of laws or discipline. It is the power of sin that twists our desires, divides our hearts, and keeps us from becoming the people God created us to be.
The good news is that God has not left us captive. In Jesus Christ, God entered our humanity to break the power of sin, forgive what we could not undo, and set us free for the life we have always longed to live. As Paul proclaims in Romans 8, "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus... for the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free."
True freedom is more than the ability to do whatever we want. It is the freedom to love, to forgive, to tell the truth, to share generously, to welcome our neighbors, and to become the very people God dreamed humanity could be.
